Almost all colleges will easily give consideration to candidates in their music program for their scholarships or grants. There are many website with information on music scholarships. The application process will vary for each scholarship. In addition to an application the musician may be asked for any of the following: transcripts, performance resume, repertoire list, recommendations and auditions – either in person or via tape. In some cases there will be an application fee.
What makes one musician more qualified for a scholarship than another? Talent is probably the most important factor. Most of the music scholarships will be awarded to the better musicians. And how do you get to be a better musician? Practice! Don’t practice until you play the piece perfectly; practice until you cannot make a mistake. Also, don’t underestimate the value of private lessons.
Any honors, awards or distinctions received will give one musician an advantage over another. Participating in All State or All District festivals is noteworthy and should be mentioned on scholarship applications along with any awards, or honors received.
The particular instrument that you play can give you an advantage over other applicants. There are some instruments which are in more demand because they are less popular. A college that is interested in having the right balance of instruments in their ensembles will be looking for these instrumentalists. Examples of these instruments would be the oboe, French horn, bassoon and cello.
For the most part, the larger music scholarships will be awarded by the college or university. Most music scholarships awarded by schools require the recipient to maintain good grades as well as play in selected ensembles. It could help to do some research. Make a call to the school to find out if your particular instrument is in demand and then look for the academic requirements for the school to see if you might qualify for a scholarship.
